Stephen Barry, Ph.D.

Chief Executive Officer

Stephen Barry, Ph.D., has extensive start up company experience, most recently as Senior Vice President of Research and Product Development at Aspen Medisys, a company commercializing medical device systems employing Radio-Frequency (RF) generators and nanoparticles for the treatment of cancer

Formerly, Dr. Barry was VP of Strategic and Product Development at Aduro Biotech, Inc., which out-licensed the technology upon which Aspen was founded, and which is now developing vaccines for cancer and infectious disease.

Prior to Aduro, Dr. Barry worked in product and business development roles at start-up companies that developed both advanced technology-based equipment and material products, with technologies and businesses variously sold to private fortune 500 and private companies, and one spinning off and proceeding to IPO. Dr. Barry received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley.

Richard Wagner, Ph.D.

Head of Organic Chemistry

Dr. Wagner is a synthetic chemist and former GSK technology executive with more than 10 years of experience in developing and implementing new approaches to synthetic chemistry, such as combinatorial synthesis, high-throughput automation for medicinal chemistry development, and novel microwave solutions.

Dr. Wagner led a multi-disciplinary team at GSK that was engaged in introducing and implementing disruptive technology across all business lines, which included Discovery Research, Development, and into manufacturing.

Dr. Wagner introduced the use of lab-based microwave reactors for accelerating tryptic digests, was a team leader engaged in the development of automated platforms for salt and polymorph screening, chemical imaging, and a novel cGMP compliant process for high-throughput production of low-dose APIs.

Dr. Wagner holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University.

J. Hayden Brownell, Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer

Dr. J. Hayden Brownell, Ph.D., is responsible for overseeing the design and development of novel microwave equipment and systems, including our reactors used in organic synthesis. Dr Brownell was co-inventor of the key microwave technology employed by UpScale, and for the past six years, Dr. Brownell has lead the design and development of the prototype microwave equipment and systems.

Prior to his work in developing microwave equipment, Dr. Brownell conducted research in very high frequency (terahertz) electromagnetic radiation phenomena and applications for eleven years in the Walsh laser laboratory at Dartmouth College and he led the laboratory from 2000 to 2007.

As a project leader, Dr. Brownell gained extensive experience in development and implementation of advanced electronics solutions for Sarnoff Corp. and various federal agencies. He earned a B.S. from Yale University in 1986 and Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1995.
